I've read the Kathy Reichs books myself (they're far, far better than Bones IMO), and have thought about reading the Patricia Cornwell books... are they in a series or do they stand alone or something else?

I love Kathy Reichs too, but Cornwall's my favourite. They a series of independent books: meaning you can read them individually, but I personally prefer reading them in order. She write an ongoing saga of a Forensic Scientist named Dr Kay Scarpetta. She's good at what she does, especially when she's working with Pete Marino. And I suspect if they ever made a series of mini-movies from the books, they would have a very hard time casting anyone to pull off Lucy as well as she's written.
